2020 Vison

It sounds strange to already be looking ahead to 2020 but for many organisations, the year has flown by. Over the last 11 months, Johnson Recruitment has helped hundreds of candidates with their job searches and we are already preparing for the new year which is historically one of the busiest times of year for job markets.

Why does the new year have such an effect on this mentality?

Many people view the new year as a milestone and a time to set new goals – it can be a great time to punctuate life.

In order to set new goals for January, now can be a fantastic time to self reflect on 2019 and provide perspective on how to better set yourself up for your 2020 goals.

Looking back at 2019 might make you appreciate the goals you have already achieved. Have you ‘kicked’ the goals you set yourself, to coin the popular phrase? However, the intention is not to make you feel bad about not achieving certain goals. If you have not reached particular goals it is time to assess whether they are still important to you and whether they should continue into 2020. Whether you have achieved the goals you have set yourself or not, self reflection can help you better structure a process to help you achieve a goal and how you can get there.

To quote James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, a book written about taking small steps to improve yourself – “you do not rise to the level of your goal, you fall to the level of your systems“.

How can you prepare for 2020 goals?

When preparing our candidates for interview we often use the STAR process and this can also be applied to preparing to complete a goal.

The STAR process is:

  • Situation: An event, project, or challenge faced
  • Task: Your responsibilities and assignments for the situation
  • Action: Steps or procedure taken to relieve or rectify situation
  • Result: Results of actions taken

By breaking up your goals into manageable parts, you are far more likely to achieve them over the next 12 months. Write yourself a list and make a start!
